Rooftop like we bringing '88 back

Made you look.

It's fitting that the inspiration for my '88 themed post comes from a song about '88 that wasn't released in '88 but in '07. I ain't gonna front, I wasn't listening to hip-hop back in '88. Damn, I didn't even have a concept as to what the four elements were. You got to remember, this was before Hammertime.

However, the LP that got me into hip-hop, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, and one of my fave ever rap tunes, a tune that pre-empted mid 90s West Coast bounce, were released in that same year.

Also, it's cool to say that I like hip hop cos it's not cool anymore. Myself being an opportunistic and aspiring hipster (not hipster), I am betting that the fallout of this genre with gen Y teens and tweens alike has hit a trough and that it is in the early stages of a recovery. Can't go too far ahead of the curve you see. Can't have too much lead time into the tipping point. Otherwise, it would be like girls rockin high waist jeans in late '05. The intended halo effect from being attributed as a early innovator simply would not be achieved.

For the real deal, here's a '88 hip hop mix that the Rub did:
Tracklist:
JVC Force - Strong Island
LL Cool J - Jack the Ripper
Public Enemy - Don't Believe the Hype
Kool G Rap - Road to the Riches

On a final note, my bday is 22/2 and I turned 8 in '88. I spotted this ride outside Assin on the weekend. If someone who reads this blog owns the ride, gimme a holla. I gotta have that license plate. Wouldn't mind the car either but damn, priorities.

oh shit #9! you're talkin my era.
i agree on the recovery.. its not dead, but the general publics fashionable liking of hiphop is nearing an end.. all the 'bling' jokes and jokers are fucking off.. with the 'deadweight element' removed, it can get back on track.. i have never acknowledged any 5 element (other than the bruce willis movie), but i'm putting this one out there. the 5th element of hiphop in 2000 is deadweight...
STOMP THE YARD!!

actually while im logged in on my highhorse, how lame was it when they tried to banish graffiti from the 4 official elements, and replace it with 'freestyling'. as if mc'ing needs 2 elemental titles. thats wack.

Here's a dope Bjork quote I read in the Guardian yesterday
"I've always listened to hip-hop. Not tons, it's not been a way of life for me, but I'm of a generation where Public Enemy changed my life. What I like most is the love of rhythm; though I don't think I've ever used those rhythms, I think it would just be wrong."
How cool is that huh? I think the greatest genius about PE is that so many people heavily bought into their rebellious brand image eric haze designed logo et al.. although they obviously had substance

interesting concept with the deadweight, although i thought for a moment you were gonna talk about macroeconomics and the disruption of market equilibrium (deadweight loss), i think that with the deadweight reduced it will make the experience feel less tainted if nothing else.. so im not too optimistic about hiphop improving at least in the short-term

didnt know about graff and the elements, i thought beatboxing was considered the 5th element tho? anyway, it's not my concern!

ps STOMP THE YARD truly sucked balls, worst film ive seen this year hands down
